Sports nutrition and body composition

Our research group has focused its efforts on sports nutrition and body composition, carrying out a series of innovative studies that have advanced the understanding of the interactions between diet, physical exercise and body composition. Using cutting-edge techniques such as bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), we have investigated key aspects such as changes in body composition and hydration status of high-performance athletes in long-duration competitions, such as triathlons and cycling races.

This research, led by Dr. Alfredo Irurtia and Dr. Marta Carrasco, has been carried out at the Body Composition Assessment Laboratory of the Catalan School of Kinanthropometry at INEFC, where we have studied in detail the effect of nutrition on body composition using methods such as DXA and BIVA. These techniques have allowed us to accurately analyse bone density, fat and lean mass, with the aim of optimising both the health status and the performance of athletes. In addition, the institution has international recognition thanks to its collaboration with the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK).

Our studies have also included the assessment of the effects of nutritional supplements, such as beetroot juice, on sports performance. In addition, we have analysed the specific nutritional needs of different sporting disciplines and developed equations to estimate body composition through bioelectrical impedance. The research has also included the study of the nutritional behaviour of cyclists in 24-hour relay races and feeding strategies in ultra-endurance events.

Finally, we have contributed to the international field through our collaboration with the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) and with leading companies in measurement technology such as FAIXAT BODYSCAN SL. These links have strengthened our capacity to offer a more complete and global view of the importance of nutrition and body composition in sports performance. This work has not only improved the understanding of the relationship between nutrition, body composition and performance, but has also provided valuable data for nutritional planning and the continuous improvement of sports training protocols.
