The Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB) continues to foster scientific research during the Barcelona World Race (BWR) through an initiative provisionally called FNOBLab.

Ocean sailing around-the-world regattas, such as the BWR, are unbeatable test platforms for scientific research projects that can impact society, both in the environmental field and in the mental and physical performance .

The projects have been divided into two areas, the first oriented to the human factor and its physiological, physical and psychological performance in extreme conditions, and the second, focused on the health of the oceans.

At this moment the entities participating in the meetings are: University of Barcelona (UB); Center for Research in Biomedical Engineering (CREB) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC); National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC); IQS-Instituto Químico de Sarriá, founding member of the Ramón Llull University; Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC); Leitat Technological Center; Eurecat, Technological Center of Catalonia; Centre d’Alt Rendiment Sant Cugat (CAR); Gastrocultura Mediterrània; and Fundación Estivill Sueño, which have already agreed to carry out a list of desirable projects that may be part of the next edition of the Barcelona World Race.

The GRCE–INEFC will lead and collaborate with CREB–UPC in two projects focused on the bioenergetics, heart neuromodulation, external and internal physical load and data science of ocean sailing during the 2019 BWR regatta, starting on January 12, 2019.
