The paper entitled “Exercise modality effect on VO2 off-transient kinetics at VO2 intensity”, authored by Ana Sousa, Ferran A. Rodríguez, Leandro Machado, João P. Vilas-Boas and Ricardo J. Fernandes has been published ahead of print in Experimental Physiology (JCR IF: 2.871).
The study shows that the on and off-transient VO2 kinetics responses from rest to a square-wave transition exercise at the severe-intensity exercise domain (i.e. 100% of VO2max) in four groups of athletes (swimmers, runners, rowers and cyclists) of comparable level are well described by a double exponential model and are symmetrical in shape. However, a larger off-transient amplitude in running compared to cycling, associated to larger VO2peak, and a slower rate of VO2 decrease during the fast phase of recovery in swimming comparing to rowing and cycling, appear to corroborate the hypothesis that sport discipline- or exercise-related differences would contribute to somewhat distinct off-transient VO2 kinetics pattern at this particular exercise domain.
The study was carried out in the Centre of Research, Education, Innovation and Intervention in Sport of the Faculty of Sport, and the Porto Biomechanics Laboratory, LABIOMEP, University of Porto, Portugal.
