Adapted and inclusive physical activity
Our research in adapted and inclusive physical activity is a developing line within our group and is led by Dr. Rafael Tarragó and Dr. Ana Bofill. The main work has been carried out on the analysis of the bioenergetics and neuromuscular factors of wheelchair fencing and wheelchair basketball, always with the marked translational nature of our group.
Our studies on wheelchair fencing initially helped us to establish the bioenergetic differences between Olympic and Paralympic fencing, in order to subsequently go deeper with different works on Paralympic fencing in simulated or real competition situations. As for wheelchair basketball, we would highlight the doctoral thesis and scientific output of Dr. Adrián García Fresneda.
In the field of disability, we have also had the opportunity to work with teams from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) on the validation of a new exoskeleton (ABLE) with people who had a spinal cord injury.
Research focused on the physical and sporting activity practised by people with disabilities is considered key to contributing to the improvement of the quality of life of this group. Research in different areas (educational, recreational, health and sports performance) seeks to contribute new knowledge regarding the planning and design of strategies that facilitate their access to physical and sporting activity, that increase their autonomy and their network of personal relationships, that enhance their sports performance and even a change of attitude in society towards these people; for this reason, our research group intends to continue developing this line of work.
