THE GROUP

The Sport Sciences Research Group of INEFC Barcelona (GRCEIB) is the first group specifically devoted to physical activity and sport sciences in Catalonia to be recognised by the AGAUR, since 2005.

Its history dates back to the 1990s, with the first work led by Professor Dr. Ferran A. Rodríguez (✝ 23-1-2023), a leading figure in sports bioenergetics. Since 2020, the group has been coordinated by Dr. Xavier Iglesias, consolidating its position as a benchmark in translational research in the sports field.

Vision
To improve the knowledge and practice of physical activity and sport through scientific research, technological development and innovation, with special attention to interdisciplinary research and excellence.

Mission
To promote and carry out integrative and interdisciplinary scientific research in sport sciences, disseminate the results in recognised international journals, transfer the new knowledge to the service of society, improve the quality of life of healthy people and of people with disabilities or illness, train young scientists in interdisciplinary research, and lead the progress towards a new scientific culture of sport and physical activity.

The group sets itself ambitious challenges that include:

  • Carrying out high-quality research projects with human and financial resources from competitive grants and contracts with public bodies and private companies.
  • Publishing our results in high-impact indexed journals and at national and international scientific congresses.
  • Training research staff and promoting their scientific and academic careers (mentoring).
  • Transferring the new knowledge to society, seeking the greatest possible impact.
  • Disseminating and giving visibility to the scientific, academic and social activities of our group.

Evolution of the group

In 2005, the Sport Sciences Research Group of INEFC Barcelona (GRCEIB) was recognised as an Emerging Research Group by the AGAUR (SGR 2005–1007 GRE). Since 2009, the group has been recognised as a Consolidated Research Group of the Government of Catalonia (AGAUR) in its successive calls: SGR 2009–1054 (GRC), SGR 2014–1665 (GRC), SGR 2017–1703 (GRC) and SGR 2021–01191 (GRC).
